After a restart of couchbase, some partitions seem to fail to reconnect

#1

After a restart of couchbase, I get these type of errors in the kafka-connect log. Many or all messages are missing as well after this.

Couchbase version 5.0.1-ce-4
Kafka-connect-couchbase 3.3.0

with kafka-connect-couchbase 3.2.3, the same problem seems to exists, but with no exceptions in the log.

09:20:22.388 [nioEventLoopGroup-3-6] WARN c.c.c.d.i.n.u.c.DefaultPromise - An exception was thrown by com.couchbase.client.dcp.conductor.DcpChannel$5$1.operationComplete()

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the report. Looks like we’re already tracking this as KAFKAC-72 (Connector stops streaming after rollback). I’m hoping to address this in the 3.3.2 release scheduled for July 17th. If you have a moment to describe your cluster topology and the restart scenario, that info might be useful in verifying the fix.

The NullPointerException is indeed a regression, tracked as JDCP-94. The fix is straightforward and low risk, so I’ll see if we can include it in the release of 3.3.1 on July 19th.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Thanks for the quick reply! The scenario where this occurs is just a dev installation where I am trying to see how our services handles connection problems to Couchbase (Also trying to reproduce a problem where it seems that kafka-connect-couchbase stops doing anything). No clustering, just a single Couchbase that I shut down for about 20 seconds, then start again. This is when I see these errors.

Regards,
Martin

I have updated to version 3.3.1 now, now I just get this instead in the log. I assume that this is the expected behaviour now before KAFKAC-72 (Connector stops streaming after rollback) is resolved.

Correct, this is currently the expected behavior. I’m prioritizing getting this fixed and will give you a status update before the end of next week.

Thanks,
David

#6

Hi Martin,

Code for reconnecting after rollback has been tested and committed to the kafka-connect-couchbase GitHub repo, and will ship in the 3.2.2 release scheduled for July 17th.

If you’d like to verify the fix works in your environment, I’d recommend building the connector from source (or if that’s a hassle, ping me and we’ll get you a pre-built snapshot). Then if you run into any issues, we’ll have a chance to address then ahead of the official release.

Thanks,
David

#7

Hi David,

Thank you for the update!
I have tested the newest SNAPSHOT-version of kafka-connect-couchbase and it seems to handle rollbacks properly.

Martin

Hi Mark,

We’ve released version 3.3.2 of the Kafka connector ahead of schedule. Might take a while for the documentation to come online, but in the mean time you can can grab it from here:

https://packages.couchbase.com/clients/kafka/3.3.2/kafka-connect-couchbase-3.3.2.zip

Thanks,
David

Hi David!

Thanks a lot for the new release!

These newer versions does indeed seem to solve the issues where it would loose the vbuckets completely. I am however now getting these Exceptions in the log, that I can’t recall getting with the 3.3.2-SNAPSHOT version, I do however get them even with that self-build version now, looks like this: (lots of these)

Everything does however seem to recover still, so not really any issues, just thought I’d share this with you
